Charleston County School
District
More than
45,000 students attend Charleston County School District's 74
elementary (K-5), middle (6-8) and high (9-12) schools, including
eight magnet schools and alternative programs. The district spans
1,000 square miles along the coast and is the second largest school
district in the state and the 84th largest in the country. Governed
by a nine-member elected county board of trustees the county is
divided into eight geographic divisions, each with its own elected
constituent board.
The public schools of Charleston County offer academic, computer
and creative arts magnet schools; an academy for technology;
alternative education programs; advanced placement programs; and
traditional education. The system, which has approximately 2,800
teachers, has an average pupil/teacher ratio of 19:1.
Charleston County schools stay on the leading edge of programs
and activities with such initiatives as safety and school-to-work. A
new uniform policy is in place at more than 30 schools. The new
magnet School of the Arts opened in 1995 providing an arts-infused
curriculum to grades 6 and 7. The school will expand a grade each
year, up to grade 12.
Other programs include child development and summer enrichment
programs, adult education, community education and English as a
second language. The county also recently opened a School-to-Work
office, further strengthening its already impressive commitment to
community business and school partnerships. |
